President Kennedy was shot.
My father was a traveling sales man. He drove a car everywhere, and, because he could sing every song written between 1945 and 1975, I know the radio was on every second he was in that car. He told us kids (my 4 sisters and I) that he was "on the road" between Wingham and Teeswater (Southwestern Ontario, Canada, eh!) when news broke into a song. When it was announced that the President had been shot, my father pulled over to the side of the road. He was kind of in the middle of nowhere and not near home. There were no cell phones and he was not near a pay phone. Soon, another car pulled over right behind my dad's car. Then, another car coming from the opposite direction pulled over. My dad got out of his car, as did the others who had pulled over. He said at first the three of them (all strangers to each other) just kinda stared at each other, and then they talked about the President. I always found that story fascinating.

2. one of the longest overtime games in NHL hockey history was played.
Again, he was "on the road". My father loved hockey, especially the Toronto Maple Leafs (Go Leafs Go!!!!). He would drive his car and listen to Leafs games on the radio. During playoffs, he would listen to any game that was broadcast over the airwaves. Often he would be traveling for 3 or 4 days at a time, and this particular time he was in Northern Ontario (or the near North to you living in the Arctic Circle). The selling day was over, however, dad wanted to reach the town where he was going to start the next day. No problem, there was a game on the radio and it wasn't snowing. Long story short, the game was going into the fourth OT when my father got to the town where he wanted to bunk for the night. Since it was well into the early hours of the "following" morning, he figured he'd have to sit in his car to finish listening to the game....us Kyte's really like our hockey. As he pulled up to the the inn where he always stayed, the parking lot was full and the little black and white TV was still blasting out Foster Hewitt and Hockey Night in Canada. He got into the bar just in time to see the puck go into the net!

3. Paul Henderson scored!
Again, "on the road"....pulled into a gas station where he KNEW the owner would have a TV. He sat around with a garage full of "Buddies" to watch the game and series winning goal. http://www.hhof.com/media/foster8.wav
I also remember where I was when that game was played. Ostrander Public School, in Ostrander, Ontario. I was in Grade Two, Miss McLean's class. We were allowed to go out into the hall and watch the game on one of those TV's that was on this CN Tower like contraption. Oh man....proud to be a Canadian that day.

I write about these events because of Michael Jackson's death, yesterday. Most people are comparing it to Elvis' death or President Kennedy's death. It's funny, because as soon as I heard the news, I thought, "Hmph, I wonder if my kids will remember where they were and what they were doing when Michael Jackson died?"

Here are my own big three "Do you remember..." events:

A. Paul Henderson's goal....already told that one....and still proud to be a Canadian!

B. Elvis' death....we were living in Dalt Donald's house in Port Carling, Ontario. We had a big HI-FI stereo and my sister and I were dancing around the living room to "Another One Bites The Dust" (I'm not making this up) by Queen. The bass was turned WAY up and those speakers were just pounding! "News Break" right in the middle of the song...."Elvis Aaron Pressley is dead." I was 12, my sister was 9. We looked at each other and said, "Oh, that's too bad....now put the song back on!!!!"

C. And now, Michael Jackson's death....Lori and I took the kids to the bank to open up their very first bank accounts. The woman opening the accounts had to leave the room for a second and when she came back she told us that she had just heard that MJ had died. I had heard earlier in the day that he had had a heart attack, so it wasn't that surprising to me. This is when it popped into my head about whether or not my kids will remember where they were and what they were doing when MJ died. Funny thing, Rocman is 12 and Mons'er is 9...."Oh, that's too bad....now give us our passbooks".

There are others which I won't go into big long stories....
....Princess Di - Rocman was 1 and we were living on the 'death curve' in the Hawkesville Hills.
....The Twin Towers - I was in my office at the dollar store when Lori called and told me two planes had hit the towers, and while she was telling me that, they collapsed.
....My Father's death - just got home from playing hockey in Drayton....message from my sister to call her no matter what time I got home. Called, busy. Called next sister, busy. Next sister in Turkey, so I didn't call her. Called next sister and she told me. November 29, 1990.

This may sound strange, but I've already thought about "remembering" what I'll be doing and where I'll be when Billy Graham dies.

What are some of your "I remember where I was and what I was doing when...."?

kyteman

What's wrong with being "normal"?

I read this recently....I have felt like this for a long time, I'm just not a good enough writer to express it.

http://www.revkevindeyoung.com/2009/06/perhaps-im-just-sick-of-revolutionaries.html

kyteman

Ipods and cutting the grass.

Tonight I was cutting the grass with our 6.5 horse gas powered lawn mower. I borrowed Roc's Ipod to listen to some tunes....which are all "my" tunes 'cuz Roc doesn't really have any tunes of his own.

Two things:

1. What's with the Ipod changing the song half way through a tune? I guess you can shake the thing and it will automatically change the song. Ok....I was walking the mower. I wasn't dancing around like a crazy man. The ipod was in my pocket. Actually, I was trying to listen to some GREAT Chuck Swindoll sermons I had downloaded and right when he'd get to a major point that had me almost shutting down the lawn mower to start taking notes, the thing would automatically change to a song by DeGarmo & Key....Addy. Then I'd just start getting into that song and on would come Petra's, Adonai....by the way, I love that song. At one point the magical ipod cut into a good song and some sweet little voice came on singing some song about a butterfly. Now, before you oldies like me who know the other two songs I mentioned jump up and yell, "Bullfrogs and Butterflies, by Evie", let me tell you that I have a 9 year old daughter who loves Hannah Montana. I forgot that I put the Hannah Montana Movie soundtrack on Roc's ipod. Therefore this sweet song was Miley singing a tune with mullet boy about butterflies or something. Of course that song played in it's entirety.

Which leads me to point #2: I discovered that I have some great tunes from my teenage years to mid twenty's on that ipod. I finally went in and asked Rocman how to stop the thing from cutting songs short....which was probably the smartest thing I did today....I almost ripped the earbuds from my ears and tossed the whole electronic devise to the street. With the amount of cars going past our house right now because of a major detour going on in Elmira, it wouldn't have taken long for that thing to get crushed and the pretty butterfly song would never.........you get the picture.

Back to the great tunes.....without listing their songs, I'll list some of the artists:
Larry Norman
Keith Green
Old Petra (with Greg X. Voltz....what a great name, eh? There's an X in his name!)
D&K (that's DeGarmo and Key....by the way, they were one of the first "Christian" bands with singers who had earrings....eeeeeeek!)
Daniel Band
Resurrection Band or Rez Band
Randy Stonehill
Benny Hester
The Imperials
some original Michael W. Smith
Brian Duncan (Don't Ya' Wanna Rap is a halarious tune)
David Meece
Servant
Steve Camp
and even a couple Stryper (wasn't a huge fan, however, Mike Sweet sure can sing).

I guess the point I'm making is that kids today don't know how good some of the "Christian" tunes were/are. Ok, I can understand them not wanting to listen to Larry Norman....he's an aquired taste. But come on, Keith Green for the slow, deep stuff and Daniel Band and Rez Band "for those about to rock". Don't get me wrong, I like Switchfoot and some of the bands that are out today. In fact, next to Daniel Band, Switchfoot is probably right up there as one of my favourite bands. I went to Roc's Jr. Youth on Thursday night and they had this Swedish techno band blasting "in the background". I mentioned to one of the 20ish year old helper kids who was there that this music sounded like something from the 1980's. He said they were huge in Europe right now and that it's just starting to catch on in North America. To me it sounded like "Ah Ha"....ya', that's right, there used to be a band called "Ah Ha" and they sounded just like this Swedish techno band....only not AS annoying (for those who might Google "Ah Ha", their big hit song was "Take On Me"). http://video.yahoo.com/watch/16522/1069250

Tell ya' what, if you're younger than 30 and you like music, check out some of the bands/singers that I listed above. Give a GOOD listen to them with a bit of an open mind. That's what youngsters want us to do with their music, is it too much to ask of them from us oldsters? And seriously.....really, Really, REALLY give Larry Norman a chance. He's got some great songs (I know, I know....he's also got some stinkers, but what band doesn't?)

List some of your favourites in the comments....y'know, "Christian" bands/singers who you liked when you were a younster....or, list some of the "Christian" bands/singers you think I should give a listen to.

kyteman

Why do we only pick half a verse?

I often send little "Tweets", when I think of it. I'm following a few people...most of them I don't even know. When I do send a "Tweet", it's usually part of Bible verse that I have read that morning. Today's part was, "...who unswervingly keeps covenant with his servants and relentlessly loves them as they sincerely live in obedience to your way.1 Kings 8:23b (The Message)

Now, why did I only pick the second part of that verse? For those who "Tweet", you know it's because we're only allowed 140 characters....give or take, I don't know the exact amount. Some of the more clever Tweeters know how to shorten words by taking letters out or skipping words altogether so they can get "more" words in the little space. I'm not clever enough to do this....and, my wife wouldn't be able to read my Tweets because she doesn't know Internet Language as well as most. She doesn't spend umteen hours on the computer like yours truly does. Don't get me wrong. I spend too much time on here reading all those blogs....mostly from people I don't even know.

Here are some of my newly found favourite blogs (why does Firefox underline "favourite" as though I spelled it incorrect? I've got all my settings set to British or Canadian....whatever):

http://tylerstanton.com/
http://30secondrule.wordpress.com/
http://bryanallain.com/blog
http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/
http://stufffchristianslike.blogspot.com/ (this one is one of my favourites, especially on Wednesdays)
http://kevinpresseault.blogspot.com/
http://withoutwax.tv/ (a close second favourite)

I plan on starting a weblog for the sports store, soon. It probably won't be funny or anything and I won't be putting "half verses" in it....at least not at first.

I kinda jumped all over the place today. Be sure to check out the weblogs I follow....most are very well thought out and well written.

Also, let me know of your favourites....I need to spend more time on here.

kyteman

This is where we start....

Really, I have nothing to write at this time.
